A home warranty is a financial protection plan that helps cover the cost of repairs or replacements for household appliances and systems. Unlike general home warranty providers, ProGuard focuses specifically on the systems that matter most but are often excluded: oil tanks and septic systems.
We provide peace of mind and financial protection when these critical systems fail, covering repairs, replacements, and environmental cleanup from spills. It's specialized coverage that fills the gaps left by most home warranties.
Homeowners insurance typically protects against sudden, unexpected events like fires, theft, or falling objects. In those cases, your insurance company may issue a check, but you're left to figure out how to solve the problem on your own.
However, homeowners insurance does not cover issues caused by wear and tear, aging, or lack of maintenance. It also excludes oil tanks and septic systems in most cases.
A ProGuard protection plan fills those gaps. We offer direct support with repairs and replacements through our nationwide network of expert technicians. Our plans include up to $100,000 in coverage for environmental cleanup and system remediation, so when problems arise, you’re not left figuring it out alone.
Yes, if you are selling your home, your plan can be transferred to the new homeowner.

Septic System Coverage
Whether you’re buying your first home, building new, or have lived in your home for years, protecting your septic system should be a priority. These systems will fail, and when they do, they can render your home unlivable until repaired.
Unlike a broken appliance, a failed septic system is complex, messy, and expensive to fix. It requires permits, materials, skilled labor, and specialized expertise. A ProGuard plan protects you from the financial burden, speeds up the repair process, reduces health risks to your family, and helps prevent environmental damage, giving you true peace of mind.
When your septic system fails, it can lead to serious problems, including:
- Wastewater backing up into your home through toilets, sinks, and showers
- Health risks for your family from exposure to contaminated water
- Damage to your floors, walls, and furnishings from overflow
- Foul odors that affect you, your family, and even your neighbors
- Contaminated water surfacing in your yard, posing a safety and legal risk
- Loss of functionality; if your toilets can’t flush, your home becomes unlivable
- Potential legal action from your municipality or state environmental agency if contamination occurs
- A failed septic system is messy, hazardous, and expensive to fix. Proactive protection is essential.
ProGuard currently offers septic system coverage costs from $599 annually with more curated products on the way.
ProGuard’s Septic System Protection Plan provides up to $25,000 in coverage for repairs, replacements, and cleanup related to your septic system. Covered items include:
- Leach field repair or replacement
- Septic tank repair or replacement
- Distribution box repair or replacement
- Aerated chamber, internal aerators, valves, controls, filters, lids, and riser rings
- Pipes connecting the tank to the leach field
- Associated labor and material costs
ProGuard’s Septic System Protection Plan does not cover any issues that existed before your coverage began.
You can choose between 1-year or 5-year coverage options. If your system is newly installed, you're eligible for the 5-year plan.
Buying a Septic System Protection Plan from ProGuard is quick and easy. Just click ‘Get Coverage,’ select your preferred plan, enter your information, and complete payment by credit card, debit card, or by mailing a check with your application.
Oil Tank Protection
An underground oil tank is hidden in the soil. The only sign of its existence will be a fill pipe and vent pipe above where the tank is located. Aboveground tanks are visible. Even if a tank is situated in a basement below ground level, ProGuard views it as an aboveground tank.
Aboveground oil tanks are dependable, but over time, they will inevitably wear down, most often corroding from the inside out. Unfortunately, leaks usually aren’t detected until it’s too late. Oil from an indoor tank can seep through basement cracks or sumps, potentially contaminating your home and local water systems. Outdoor tanks can leak into soil and groundwater, triggering costly environmental cleanup under strict local regulations.
With ProGuard, you’re protected from these risks.
A failed oil tank can trigger a cascade of costly and stressful problems, and without ProGuard, you're on your own to deal with them:
- Oil removal becomes an emergency. A leaking tank can release hundreds of gallons of oil. You’ll need to call a specialized contractor to pump it out, at a cost of thousands.
- Your home loses heat. With the tank offline, you’re left without a working heating system.
- You’re forced to find a replacement fast. In a rush, you’ll have little leverage to compare bids or negotiate. Contractors know this, and prices climb.
- Environmental regulations kick in. Cleanup must meet strict state and local standards, driving costs even higher, often into the five figures.
- You may be liable for neighboring property damage. If oil spreads into adjacent land, cleanup responsibility (and costs) can extend beyond your yard.
- Cleanup isn’t considered complete until the DEP signs off. You’ll be on the hook until soil tests confirm everything meets code.
- With ProGuard, these risks are covered, so you’re not alone in managing a costly environmental emergency.
Our standard price for Aboveground Oil Tank Protection is $189 per year; however, if you use one of our partners to deliver your oil or install your new oil tank, you may be eligible for a discount. Check our ‘Get Coverage’ page for more details.
Our Aboveground Oil Tank Protection Plan provides $50,000 of environmental clean-up coverage. It also contributes $2,000 to the cost of a new tank. When you enroll, your tank needs to be in good condition and not leaking. If your tank does not meet our criteria or has already started to fail at time of enrollment, your claim will be denied.
If you own the tank (typically the case if you're the homeowner) and it meets our eligibility criteria, including no signs of an active leak, you’re eligible to enroll.
In most cases, no. Underground oil tanks typically fail due to corrosion or general wear and tear, both of which are standard exclusions in most homeowners’ policies. Many policies also explicitly exclude coverage for oil contamination, regardless of the cause.

ProGuard offers both 1-year and 5-year coverage options. If you’ve recently installed a new tank or purchased a new home, you may be eligible for a 5-year plan.
Oil companies are experts in delivering oil, not in protecting oil tanks. Some may offer a “tank protection plan,” but unless it’s ProGuard, coverage is often limited. These plans typically offer a small discount on a replacement tank, but with no support for cleanup or environmental remediation.
They also don’t provide the independent expertise or advocacy that ProGuard does during a claim. And unlike ProGuard, these plans are rarely underwritten by large, financially secure insurance carriers, which means you can’t always count on them to pay out.
Always look for the name ProGuard to ensure your protection is real and reliable.
Underground tanks, often made of steel and installed decades ago, are steadily corroding due to contact with soil and groundwater. It’s not a question of if they’ll leak, but when. Once oil escapes, it can travel through the soil and contaminate nearby water sources. Cleanup is strictly regulated and can cost tens of thousands of dollars if you're not protected by ProGuard.
ProGuard also adds value when selling your home. Our coverage is transferable to the new homeowner, offering added peace of mind. And despite what some believe, you are not legally required to remove your underground tank in order to sell your home.
There are many — and they can escalate quickly. Here’s what you may face:
- Oil removal becomes an emergency. If oil is actively leaking, you’ll need a specialist to pump it out immediately. That alone can cost thousands.
- Your home loses heat. With the tank out of commission, you’re suddenly without a way to heat your home.
- Replacement becomes urgent. You’ll need a new aboveground tank installed fast. Contractors know you’re in a bind, leaving little room to negotiate pricing.
- Cleanup costs skyrocket. Environmental regulations require thorough remediation. Your bill can easily climb into five figures.
- You may be responsible for neighboring damage. If oil spreads beyond your property line, you could be liable for cleaning up adjacent land.
- Structural risks arise. If the tank is near your foundation or buried in sandy soil, removal can require extra support to protect your home—pushing costs toward six figures.
- The job isn’t done until it’s approved. The Department of Environmental Protection must confirm the soil is clean before the project is complete.
- Only ProGuard has the experience and resources to handle these issues swiftly and affordably.
Pricing depends on factors like your tank’s location and whether you use a ProGuard partner for oil delivery. Plans start at $471.
Underground Oil Tank Protection Plan provides $100,000 of environmental clean-up coverage. It also contributes $1,500 to the cost of a new tank.
To enroll, you’ll need a soil test that meets our standards to confirm your tank is not leaking. Give us a call to learn more about this requirement and how to get started.
In most cases, no. Underground oil tanks typically fail due to corrosion or general wear and tear, both of which are standard exclusions in most homeowners’ policies. Many policies also explicitly exclude coverage for oil contamination, regardless of the cause.
